MANAGING CORONAVIRUS-RELATED ANXIETY

Is it just me, or is the whole world losing its mind at the moment? We can’t go anywhere without seeing hysterical headlines, in capitals with exclamation marks, telling us how scared we should be. And don’t even get me started on the TV! I’m one of the fortunate few who doesn’t have one, but I hear from my mum - an avid TV watcher and legendary worrier - that the coronavirus updates are constant.

NO WONDER EVERYONE'S FREAKING OUT!

My friend visited last Sunday after going shopping and brought me a gift of toilet paper. It was a joke, but now I’m grateful for it because the loo roll shelves in Asda are bare. A friend of a friend had her hand sanitiser stolen in a coffee shop the other day. And it’s getting hard to buy hand soap. What is going on?

(As a side note: why do people suddenly need so much soap? I know we’re supposed to wash our hands now, but was nobody washing their hands before? Ewww. I’d rather not think too much about that.)

Probably 90% of my clients have some kind of anxiety issue; even if that’s not the main reason they come to me, we get it under control as part of the treatment.

Everything in life is easier to cope with if you’re calm.

COVID-19 is serious, but aside from doing everything experts advise to keep safe, worrying about everything bad that could happen really isn’t helping; it's just increasing anxiety levels and weakening immunity. Anxiety is a primitive biological fight-or-flight response to danger, encouraging us to run fast and fight hard under attack from a predatory animal or tsunami.

You can't run from a virus,

or beat it to death with a rock!

ANXIETY IS A HUGE ISSUE EVEN WITHOUT THIS NEW WORRY

THE CONTROL SYSTEM IS A FAST, EFFECTIVE HYPNOSIS METHOD TO ACHIEVE CLEAR, MEASURABLE RESULTS

ANXIETY AND PANIC ARE USELESS IN AN OUTBREAK.

Worrying, obsessively checking the news, watching the numbers and Googling symptoms won’t protect you from anything. What it will do is constantly flood your body with stress hormones, actually weakening your immune system and leaving you more vulnerable to viral infection.

Panic causes hyperventilation; difficulty breathing is a symptom of the virus, so of course this will immediately create even more fear. Fear leads to the panic buying we’re seeing at the moment, and the sight of stripped shelves makes everything feel 100 times worse than it really is. It's spiralling out of control.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT YOUR ANXIETY?

THE FIRST THING I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IS:

STOP CHECKING.

I’m not saying you should stick your head in the sand, but once a day is enough. All that can be achieved from minute-by-minute updates about which celebrity tested positive, how many people died today etc. is to make yourself more scared and stressed.

If the telly is constantly giving you updates, and according to my mum there’s no getting away from it now, turn the thing off. Watch Netflix. Read a book. Go for a walk. If you’re self isolating, do an exercise or yoga class on YouTube. Find an online course and learn something new. Talk to family & friends on the phone or even better, video chat. WhatsApp is your friend.

Distract yourself in any way you can!

If you scan yourself for new, unfamiliar sensations, you will find them and turn them into symptoms. It's easy is to draw the wrong conclusions when the virus is all anyone talks about.

Distract yourself in any way you can!

THE SAME GOES FOR CONSTANT SELF-CHECKING

BREATHE!

Yes, we all do it already, but most of us don’t do it well. Shallow breathing is terrible for our lung function and increases anxiety. I’ll be doing a video about this, so please check it out, but in the meantime remember to breathe slowly and deeply, into your belly and chest, and breathe out slower than you breathe in.

You can get through this the easy way or the hard way.

The hard way is to be scared and stressed. The easy way is to be calm, relax, and

always remember to breathe!

WHAT MY CLIENTS SAY

"Claire has helped me with some deeply personal & difficult issues, things I didn't think anyone could help me with let alone help me get rid of. She went the extra mile with me just to ensure that I was where I should be. Not only is she amazing at what she does (and I'm still mind blown at what she does), she's a beautiful person who totally puts you at ease. I recommend her massively!!"
