DO YOU CONTROL YOUR DRINKING, OR DOES IT
NEXT MORNING YOU WAKE WITH A HANGOVER AND A FEELING OF DREAD.
Do you know what you did last night?
Did you drunk text your ex? Dance naked on the bar? Tell your boss what you really think of him? The creeping anxiety, shame and guilt build up to panic. You daren't look at your phone or social media in case there's incriminating photographic evidence. You can't face your friends. You feel embarrassed at the thought of what you might have done.
You swear you'll never drink again.
But of course you do. Next time you go out you have the best intentions; you won't lose control this time. But that cliff edge is right there, and you can't help falling over it again and again.
SIGNS THAT IT MAY BE TIME TO ASK FOR HELP
Do you drink to drown out your problems, to relax or to get to sleep?
Do you wish you could drink socially without getting drunk?
Do you prefer to drink alone, rather than with other people?
Is your drinking negatively affecting your work or education?
Have you ever tried to stop drinking, or to drink less, and found that you can’t?
Do you drink in the morning, before work?
Do you ever lose your memory because of your drinking?
Do you lie to friends and family about how much or how often you drink?
Do other people comment on your drinking and think it’s a problem?
MODERATION BEATS DEPRIVATION!
Drinking excessively is a learned behaviour pattern. It's like giving a baby a dummy: "I feel bad, make me feel good. Quickly!" You learn that you feel less socially awkward, less stressed or more confident with a few drinks down you, so your subconscious mind latches onto that and always offers another drink as a solution to those feelings. Once this becomes compulsive it's hard, if not impossible, to break the cycle with willpower alone. Total abstinence can seem like the only answer: remove temptation completely by committing to never drink again.
But what if you were not only able to have just one glass of wine with a meal, but you only WANT one glass and just don't fancy a second one?
